Jay DeFeo made this untitled drawing using graphite on paper. Graphite, essentially pencil lead, is a humble material, readily available and widely used for sketching and preliminary studies. But here, DeFeo coaxes incredible density and dynamism from it. Look closely, and you’ll see how she builds up the image through countless strokes, layering graphite to create areas of deep shadow and radiant light. The directionality of these marks gives the composition its explosive energy, as if we're witnessing a burst frozen in time. The intense concentration of lines suggests a meditative, almost obsessive process. This drawing might be considered 'just' a study, but DeFeo’s commitment to materials and making elevates it. It reminds us that even the simplest media can yield complex and powerful results, blurring the lines between a sketch and a finished work of art.
