Editor: So, this is a portrait of Alexander, Prince of the Netherlands, created between 1884 and 1890 by E. and A. Tilly. It's a print, an engraving, and it strikes me as a pretty formal depiction. What narratives do you think this engraving speaks to? Curator: This portrait allows us to explore power and representation. The very act of creating and disseminating this image, through a readily available print, served a political function. Consider the role of photography and printmaking in constructing and reinforcing dynastic narratives. How does this portrait contribute to the image of the monarchy in a time of immense social change and growing democratic ideals? Editor: That's interesting. It makes me think about how carefully these images were curated to project a certain image. Do you think the realism of the engraving served a particular purpose in that? Curator: Exactly. The choice of realism, as opposed to a more romanticized style, might have been a deliberate attempt to convey a sense of authenticity and stability. It presents him as a man of the people, but the trappings of formal wear situate him in an elite, privileged position. To what extent can we consider this to be propaganda, intentional or otherwise? Editor: It makes you wonder how Alexander himself felt about it, being presented this way to the public. Thanks, I see so much more in this now than I did at first glance! Curator: And seeing beyond the surface, interrogating the societal dynamics in play, empowers us as viewers, and I appreciate the insight you brought today.
