Charles Caseau made this piece, Jug, sometime in the 20th century, using what looks like watercolor or gouache on paper. It’s all about soft edges, like a dream half-remembered. The background has this gritty texture, like stucco, which contrasts with the fluid, almost drippy, blue patterns floating on top. That blue feels applied in layers, translucent in some spots, more solid in others. Look at how that large blue shape sort of unfurls across the paper, balanced by the smaller, cloud-like form to the right. It's not quite symmetrical, thank goodness, but it has a lovely sense of movement. I love how the blue is contained by a silver or grey outline, it reminds me of enamel. The process feels intuitive, like he’s letting the materials do their thing, embracing imperfections. It’s got a naive, outsider art quality to it, a bit like Forrest Bess, but with a softer touch. It’s humble, quiet, and leaves you space to wander.
