This 10th century Byzantine icon, depicting Saint Arethas, is a fine example of the art of icon painting, a form of religious art common in the Eastern Orthodox Church. The icon is painted in the traditional style, with a simplified and stylized figure rendered in a frontal pose. The use of gold leaf for the background, as well as the inscription in Greek, is typical of Byzantine iconography. The icon is currently on display at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD.
