Corneille painted “Tiger in Love”, and it’s all yellows, reds and greens, laid down in these flat, joyful shapes. I imagine Corneille moving around the canvas, shifting and refining. It's a painting about desire. See how the tiger looms in the window, a bright yellow mask with piercing eyes? I wonder what Corneille was thinking, making this tiger the voyeur in this interior scene. And what about that reclining figure down below? They’re bathed in this otherworldly green, all curves and invitation. It reminds me of other painters, like Matisse, who also found such joy in flat color and simple forms. It’s like Corneille is playing with us, asking: what does it mean to look? What does it mean to desire? And how can we make it all into a painting? These artists teach us that painting is an act of exchange. A dialogue across time, inspiring new ways of seeing and feeling.
