This page of diverse ornaments was produced by Cécile Beauvallet, using pen and ink. The linear quality and precision of these drawings are really striking. Notice how the artist rendered each form distinctly, with careful attention to the details of neoclassical furniture, sculpture and architectural elements. This type of drawing can be considered technical or architectural, and would have required skill and accuracy. Consider the amount of time it would have taken to plan, draw, and etch such a detailed composition. Before photography, drawings and prints like these were the primary means of circulating visual information. While this sheet might have been made in service of teaching, or to document design ideas, it also bears a lot of aesthetic refinement. Ultimately, understanding the material basis and the processes used to create such an image allows us to appreciate not only the skill of the artist, but also the social and cultural contexts in which it was made.
