"Angels mourning over Christ after the flagellation" is a terracotta sculpture made by Luisa Roldán in the late 17th or early 18th century. Roldán, also known as La Roldana, was a court sculptor for Spanish Kings Charles II and Philip V. The sculpture depicts a profoundly human Christ, kneeling and marked by violence, attended by two angels. The expressions on the angels' faces convey grief, reflecting the emotional intensity characteristic of Baroque art. As a woman artist in a male-dominated era, Roldán navigated the constraints of her time while achieving professional success. Her personal experiences undoubtedly influenced her work. The religious intensity of 17th-century Spain, combined with her own artistic vision, allowed her to create emotionally charged sculptures. The work evokes empathy, inviting viewers to contemplate themes of suffering, compassion, and the human condition, challenging traditional representations of both women and religious figures.
