Antonio Bueno painted this Still Life with oil paint on canvas. The artist applied the paint in thin layers to depict an arrangement of a broken mannequin, a discarded picture frame, and chess pieces. Looking closely, the canvas's smooth surface creates a hyperrealistic effect, mimicking the textures of the doll's worn fabric, the wood grain of the frame, and the glossy finish of the chess pieces. The artist painstakingly recreated the effects of wear and tear, in what one may call trompe l’oeil. This highly skilled technique is rooted in a long tradition of representational painting, where mastery of materials and techniques was prized. However, there's a modern twist here. Bueno’s choice of subject matter transforms the still life genre, from a display of wealth and abundance to a more unsettling meditation on decay, consumption and obsolescence. This work prompts us to consider not only the artist's technical skill, but also the broader cultural context in which it was made. By blurring the boundaries between craft and fine art, Bueno invites us to question the values we place on skill, originality, and the art market itself.
