This print, “Onderboezem,” was made by Cornelis Danckerts around the mid-17th century. Danckerts worked in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age, a period of great wealth for the Dutch Republic. And what does a wealthy society want? To show off its wealth of course. Danckerts produced prints that catered to this need. The image presents a design for an elaborate fireplace surround, including ornate carvings and classical architectural elements. These designs were often used by wealthy merchants and nobles to decorate their homes and signal their status. This print provides us with insight into the tastes and values of Dutch society at the time, when both comfort and status became intertwined. Understanding the social and economic context in which art is produced is crucial for interpreting its meaning. By studying historical documents, architectural treatises, and other primary sources, we can gain a deeper appreciation of the social forces that shaped this artwork.
