Robert Storm Petersen made this drawing for the newspaper strip "Dagens Flue" using ink on paper. Look how the thick, confident lines give the figure such a strong presence. You can almost feel the weight of the ink as it moves across the page, defining the shapes of the man’s coat and hat. The texture is smooth, but those bold strokes create a sense of depth. Notice the way the ink pools and thins, suggesting shadows and light. The tree beside him is constructed from similar marks, so that the composition feels immediate and alive. It's as if you are watching Petersen's mind at work, transforming simple materials into something meaningful. The directness and simplicity reminds me of Philip Guston, another artist who wasn’t afraid to let his lines be a bit wonky, in the service of something deeper. Ultimately, it is this willingness to embrace imperfection that gives the work its charm and invites us to find our own story within it.
