Henri Martin made this park scene with oil on canvas, and what grabs me is the way he’s built it up bit by bit, like mosaic. Each tiny dab of color is placed just so, creating a shimmering effect, an all-over field of light. Up close you can see the individual strokes, the materiality of the paint, but step back and the whole thing comes into focus, that pergola draped in flowers, the stillness of the pond. I wonder about the weight of the paint, the feeling of applying all those tiny marks, like breaths. It’s not about hiding the process, but reveling in it. Look at the way he’s captured the light reflecting on the pond. It’s mesmerizing, isn’t it? I’m reminded a little of Seurat, but there’s something looser, more lyrical here. Martin lets the painting breathe, embracing the messy beauty of nature. It’s a reminder that art isn’t about perfection, but about feeling, about capturing a fleeting moment, a particular way of seeing the world.
