Wilhelm Ivens made this albumen print of the teachers’ training college in Nijmegen, probably in the 1880s. The photograph illustrates the late 19th-century Dutch commitment to education and professional training. You can see that the architecture of the school itself is solid and respectable, designed to convey a sense of civic importance. The students, though, are not in the foreground. They stand to the side, almost as part of the architecture. Looking closely, we can think about the way that the institution shapes individual lives. We might ask: What kind of social mobility did this training offer? What role did teachers play in shaping national identity and values? These are questions that can be explored through archival research and by examining the broader history of education in the Netherlands. By studying photographs like this, we can learn a great deal about the social and institutional forces that shaped the past.
