Editor: This is an untitled work by Robyn Denny. The geometric composition in reds, blues, and browns set against a purple background is really striking. How would you describe the visual relationships in this piece? Curator: The orchestration of color is critical here. Note the interplay between the hard-edged forms and the subtle shifts in hue. The chromatic relationships create a visual tension, a push and pull that activates the surface. Editor: So, the relationships between the colors are more important than what the shapes might represent? Curator: Precisely. The forms are merely a vehicle for exploring the potential of pure color and spatial relationships. Consider how the artist manipulates positive and negative space. Editor: I hadn’t considered that. It makes you see how the composition creates its own reality. Curator: Indeed. The painting operates as a self-contained system of visual language.
