Cornelis Pronk made this drawing of Kasteel St.-Aldegonde te West-Souburg with pen in gray ink around 1746. Pronk was one of the leading topographical artists in the Netherlands at that time. In this image, we see the castle from across a moat, with an approaching horse and carriage. The building is depicted with accuracy, but more than that, the artist is showing us the wealth and status of the family that owns this country estate. The inclusion of the horse and carriage and figures walking in front of the estate emphasizes the class dynamics of the time. The Dutch Republic in the 18th century was characterized by a widening gap between rich and poor, as well as a culture of displaying status. By researching the history of the family that owned this estate at the time, as well as Dutch fashion and culture, we can learn more about the social history that shaped this artwork.
