Edouard Riou created this illustration, “Story Le Rubis Du Grand-lama”, using ink on paper. We can imagine that the context in which Riou created his work was greatly influenced by the French colonial empire, which was at its peak in the 19th century. Here, we see a Western man, who appears to be of high social standing, engaging with three Western women. It seems they may be involved in a discussion or perhaps a negotiation. Reflecting on this image today, one can’t help but wonder about what is not pictured: where are the people who actually hold the Ruby of Grand-lama? This illustration seems to reinforce the colonial dynamic of centering Western figures in stories, even when they’re interacting with other cultures. This illustration, like many from its time, invites us to consider the power dynamics inherent in representation. It encourages us to reflect on the stories we tell and whose perspectives are privileged.
