Deborah Luster made this photograph, St. Gabriel, Louisiana, using the tintype process, which feels immediate and historical all at once. It’s like a moment pulled straight from the past. Look at the way the light catches the woman's face, how the shadows define her features. It's a simple palette – blacks, whites, and muted yellows, but the subtleties create a world of feeling. The surface has this beautiful, almost metallic sheen, doesn't it? You can see the texture, the slight imperfections that make it feel so human. I love how the light illuminates the right side of her face, leaving the other in shadow. It’s as if time itself is etched into her skin. This piece reminds me a little of some of the portraiture of Alice Neel, raw and unflinching. It makes you think about how we see each other, and the stories our faces tell.
