Adolphe Burdet, around the turn of the century, shows us a bridge in a forest in this tiny image. Look at the way the bridge, with its horizontal lines, cuts through the verticality of the trees, creating a sense of depth. You can almost feel the cool, damp air of the forest. Burdet captures a fleeting moment, a quiet scene, with those muted tones and soft light. I bet he was trying to distill the landscape into a pure, emotional essence. It’s easy to imagine him out there, setting up his equipment, waiting for the perfect light to capture this scene. He had to get the composition just right. And I wonder what he was thinking, what feelings or memories he was trying to convey, as he framed that bridge in the woods. His eye and hand capture the essence of the landscape and our own passing thoughts.
