Mary Berner made this Applique Quilt, and though it doesn't have a date, it's pure process, you know? The making of it. The composition of this quilt, with its grid of floral arrangements and wreaths, makes me think about how process-led artmaking invites unexpected connections. What I love about quilts is that they are, like abstract paintings, also about the grid. Berner’s hand is all over this piece. You can feel the intimacy of the maker. The shapes are carefully cut out and layered onto the canvas in red and green hues. I am interested in this constant shift between geometry and expression. Berner has relatives in common with Henri Matisse, particularly in the way she creates floral motifs with such simple shapes. This is where art takes flight: a conversation across time and disciplines. What does this piece mean? I don't know, but I'm so happy it exists.
