Rik Wouters made this drawing, *Schrijvende vrouw, op de rug gezien*, with ink on paper. Look at the way Wouters lays down these marks, so immediate and direct. It really highlights the process of artmaking. The ink is both transparent and opaque, pooling in some areas and fading in others. It gives the whole image a lively, almost vibrating quality. Notice how a single, bold stroke defines the back of the chair, and how the strokes around her head just suggest the form without fully describing it. This piece reminds me of work by Henri Matisse. Both artists share a love for simple, elegant lines and the ability to capture the essence of a subject with minimal detail. But Wouters has a unique way of showing us that art isn't about perfect representation, but about capturing a feeling, an experience. It’s a reminder that art is always an ongoing conversation, full of new ideas and unexpected connections.
