Here in the Rijksmuseum is a woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei, titled "Woman with Book," created sometime between 1786 and 1868. Notice how the composition is structured by a series of vertical and horizontal planes which creates a sense of stillness. The palette is restrained, dominated by muted tones of green, grey, and black. However, there are also bursts of color in the floral patterns of the woman's kimono. Consider how Gakutei destabilizes traditional categories of representation by combining elements of portraiture with abstract, decorative patterns. The floral designs could be seen as a semiotic system that functions beyond mere aesthetics. They suggest the woman’s refined character, inviting us to interpret the cultural codes embedded in the image.
