Anton Heyboer made this drawing, Marriage Marike and Anton, using ink or graphite on paper. The surface is so light and open, with just one block of darker marks in the middle and these trails of writing around it. I’m struck by the way he lets the white of the paper breathe. It’s like the drawing is a thought bubble, a fleeting idea captured just before it disappears. Look at the central rectangle. It's a dense patch of lines and symbols, a little world of its own. The marks are raw, almost frantic, and they build up this intense energy. You can almost feel Heyboer’s hand moving, scratching, and layering. I love how the edges of the rectangle are blurred, like the image is dissolving. For me, this piece has some similarities to the work of Cy Twombly, where drawing meets writing, creating this field of open possibilities. Both artists embrace the messy, unresolved quality of artmaking, reminding us that it’s okay not to have all the answers. It’s about asking questions, exploring feelings, and letting the process lead the way.
