Vilhelm Lundstrom created this pencil drawing, titled *Female Model, 3/4 Figure, with Hand to Mouth*, at an unknown date. The drawing is currently located at the SMK - Statens Museum for Kunst. Lundstrom’s work reflects an interesting intersection of institutional training and avant-garde experimentation. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and yet was clearly influenced by cubism and other modernist movements. This drawing depicts the female nude, a typical subject of academic art, but it also explores abstraction and simplification of form. We can see in this image the way that academic institutions were beginning to acknowledge modernism in the early 20th century, while continuing to emphasize the traditions of figurative drawing. The study of drawings such as this one can help us better understand the changing role of art academies and museums during this period. We might consult the archives of the Royal Danish Academy or exhibition reviews from the time to gain further insight.
