Curatorial notes

"Vechtende Jongens," or "Fighting Boys," is an undated etching of unknown authorship. It encapsulates everyday scenes of gendered life. Here, a group of boys fight playfully with sticks as weapons, while a young man stands beside a woman seated in contemplation. There is an undeniable contrast between the female figure and the boisterous boys. She sits quietly, looking down at her hands, perhaps burdened by the weight of expectations placed upon women, while the boys enact freedom from such expectations, expressing themselves through physical play. This scene speaks to the societal forces shaping gender roles. Is the woman internalizing these constraints? Is she thinking about the expectations of domesticity and motherhood, or is she perhaps contemplating an alternative narrative, separate from the fighting boys? "Vechtende Jongens" invites us to consider the lived experiences of gender, and the emotional landscapes they inhabit."
