Richard Diebenkorn made this nude drawing with graphite on paper. He probably stood in front of his model, trying to capture not just what he saw, but what he felt. Isn’t it funny how the simplest lines can suggest so much? I mean, it’s just graphite on paper, but there’s a whole human being there, full of weight, mass, and presence. The sketchiness is what I like, the fact that the artist has left some parts unresolved, or maybe re-drawn them. It has a vulnerability to it. You know, like it hasn’t been overworked. For me, it is in these lines that we get a glimpse into Diebenkorn’s process, his thought, and his way of seeing. The painting is an invitation for us to explore the possibilities of form and representation. And so we, as artists, join in the conversation.
