This delicate pencil sketch, Studie, mogelijk van een onderdeel om paarden mee aan te spannen, was made by George Hendrik Breitner, and now resides in the Rijksmuseum. You can almost feel Breitner’s hand moving across the page, testing out these lines, trying to capture something essential with very little. The paper itself is almost like skin, with its own subtle texture and tone. The drawing appears tentative, almost like a whisper. The lines are thin, but there's a confidence in their placement. See how the suggestion of form emerges from just a few strokes? It reminds me of how a sculptor might block out a figure, finding the basic shape before adding details. It’s almost like he’s thinking aloud, working out the puzzle of how to represent something real with just a few marks. This drawing reminds me of Cy Twombly’s work, the way he could suggest so much with so little. Art is a process. It’s not always about perfection, but about the journey of discovery.
