Curatorial notes

This etching, "Vrouw biddend voor een altaar," meaning "Woman Praying Before an Altar," was created by Maria van Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, who was a Countess of Flanders. Born into nobility in the mid-19th century, Maria occupied a unique position, both privileged and constrained by societal expectations of her gender and class. The setting, a dimly lit chapel, amplifies the personal nature of prayer. The architecture looms overhead as a black and white tiled floor stretches toward an altar, where a lone figure kneels. Consider the Countess's own life. What unspoken hopes or fears might she have brought to her own moments of prayer? As a noblewoman, her life would have been dedicated to a world of social expectations. Did she experience the need for solace, for connection to something beyond the rituals of her daily life? Did her life in a gilded cage bring her closer to or further from spirituality? This image provides a window into a moment of contemplation, one that transcends the Countess's particular time.
