These two photographs, taken by Norbert van den Berg in 1958 and 1930, respectively, offer a glimpse into the garden of Villa Tritone in Sorrento. The images, printed in monochrome, capture a dance of light and shadow. The path, shrouded by foliage, draws the eye into the distance. The darks are so deep, and the lights, where they hit, make the path seem as though it glows. The second image presents an aquarium, a contained world teeming with life obscured by the reflections on the glass, a sense of mystery and depth which draws the eye, and makes me think of Cy Twombly. Van den Berg's photographs remind me of the work of Eugène Atget, who wandered the streets of Paris documenting its changing landscape. Like Atget, Van den Berg captures the beauty of the everyday, inviting us to pause and appreciate the poetry of the world around us.
