René Magritte made Pebble with I'm guessing ink and watercolor, in his signature style of playful yet thought-provoking imagery. The lines are so fluid and economical, kind of like Matisse, yet they describe a scene that feels intimate and slightly surreal. It’s that plaid backdrop against the figure that feels so off. You can see it's not so much about the surface appearances of things, but more about what might be felt or imagined. I wonder what Magritte was thinking when he made it? Was he trying to break free from the traditional nude, injecting his own kind of quirky magic into it? I love how he’s taken a very traditional subject and infused it with a modern sensibility. It makes you think about what’s real and what’s not, right? And isn’t that what art's all about?
