Jean Degottex created this untitled work, using dynamic brushstrokes of white paint against a stark black background. The calligraphic gestures present here echo ancient forms of writing and mark-making. These shapes remind us of the symbols that appear in the East and the West, from Chinese calligraphy to the gestural strokes of Abstract Expressionism. Think of the way a simple line can convey so much—movement, energy, even emotion. Just as early cave paintings captured the essence of animals with a few strokes, Degottex’s painting uses spontaneity to bypass conscious thought, tapping into the subconscious. The contrast between light and dark creates a visual tension, pulling us into the depths of our own emotional responses, mirroring the ways primal fears and desires have been portrayed across cultures.
