This lidded jar was made by Crown Derby, using bone china, and decorated with gilding. The jar’s elegant form is achieved by throwing the clay on a wheel and firing it at high temperature. Its surface is a smooth canvas for the gilded decoration. The vibrant yellow glaze that serves as a backdrop highlights the raised gold foliage and butterfly motif. The meticulous application of gold leaf and geometric patterns speaks to the skill of the porcelain painters. The gold creates a layered tactile surface, which would have been an object of luxury, handled with care. Crown Derby was one of several English companies seeking to emulate the success of Asian porcelain, but they added their distinctive European flair. As you can see, the finished product reflects the labor, expertise, and artistry involved in its creation, and speaks to the importance of materials, and making, in understanding its full meaning.
