Carlo Carra made this still life, Natura morta con la squadra, in 1917, using oil on canvas. The muted color palette here, and the way the objects are rendered with such solidity, really draws me in, especially the artist’s process of layering and building up the forms. There’s a stillness to this painting, a quietness that invites contemplation. Look at the subtle textures, the way the light catches the surface of the pitcher. Notice the dark dot on the triangle, how it contrasts with the ochre. Each mark feels deliberate. Then the plate on the bottom right; the way it appears to float, defying gravity. For me, it's not just about representing objects, it's about capturing a feeling, a mood, an atmosphere. Carrà reminds me of Giorgio Morandi, another Italian artist who explored similar themes of stillness and simplicity. These artists both seem to understand that art is not about fixed meanings, but about the ongoing conversation between the artist, the artwork, and the viewer.
