Studies 1896

These studies were made by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet with graphite on paper. The artist carefully applied the medium of graphite to build up tone and suggest a human face and folded fabric. Notice the subtle gradations achieved by varying the pressure and density of the graphite marks. The smooth, reflective qualities of graphite lend depth and volume to the forms. The careful control and skillful application of the artist demonstrates a mastery of the medium. The artist has allowed us a glimpse into his process. The artist is inviting us to contemplate the significance of materials and the act of creation.
