This is a Roemer glass, crafted by Maria Tesselschade Roemers Visscher. Notice the interplay between the smooth, translucent body of the glass and the tactile, almost organic texture of the applied prunts around its stem. The prunts, small blobs of glass with a raspberry shape, create a rhythm that is both decorative and functional, providing a grip. The cool green tint enhances the glass's natural qualities. Observe the delicate white calligraphic inscription, it contrasts with the glass's weight, adding a layer of intellectual and aesthetic refinement. Roemers Visscher, celebrated for her calligraphy, uses this skill here to elevate a functional object into a work of art. Consider this Roemer as more than a drinking vessel. It embodies a fusion of form and function, craft and intellect, inviting us to contemplate the rich interplay between materiality and meaning.

A roemer is a wine glass. It has a taller, more slender stem than a Berkemeyer, and a convex bowl. Large examples were passed from person to person when a toast was drunk. The Latin inscription on this glass is derived from the Roman poet Terence and roughly translates as: ‘This is how I treat my friends’. In other words: I share a glass with those I consider to be friends.
