This Roemer, or drinking glass, was created by the renowned Dutch artist Maria Tesselschade Roemers Visscher in the 17th century. The piece features a clear, green glass body with a decorative, molded stem adorned with spherical glass elements. The bowl of the glass showcases a beautiful and intricate engraved design, likely composed of swirling, calligraphic motifs. The glass, currently housed in the Rijksmuseum, is a fine example of Dutch decorative arts from the period, showcasing Visscher's skill as a glass engraver.
Comments
A roemer is a wine glass. It has a taller, more slender stem than a Berkemeyer, and a convex bowl. Large examples were passed from person to person when a toast was drunk. The Latin inscription on this glass is derived from the Roman poet Terence and roughly translates as: ‘This is how I treat my friends’. In other words: I share a glass with those I consider to be friends.
