This photograph, "Kamer in landhuis De Wildbaan, Driebergen, met bureau, studieboeken en jachttrofeeën," was taken by Henry Pauw van Wieldrecht, though we don't know exactly when. The sepia tones create a sense of quiet contemplation and stillness. I'm drawn to how the artist uses light to play with texture. The walls, adorned with hunting trophies and various framed artworks, create a busy, almost chaotic surface. Yet, the light softens the scene. The trophies, in particular, stand out. They are morbid and yet dignified, remnants of a very particular kind of life. It’s fascinating to me how Wieldrecht captures the interior of this domestic space, almost like a stage set. There's a tension between the wildness suggested by the hunting trophies and the order of the books, furniture, and various objects, giving the image a feeling of contained energy. I am reminded a little of the sets in early surrealist films, like Cocteau, but with more of a naturalist perspective. It leaves you with questions.
