Village scene 

Regnu’s “Village Scene,” now held at the Städel Museum, offers a glimpse into rural life, likely during the 18th century when societal structures were deeply rooted in agricultural labor and class distinctions. The painting subtly weaves together the lives of the villagers. A man pushes a wheelbarrow, embodying the physical labor expected of the working class, while a couple, perhaps returning home, stands by their cottage. This juxtaposition silently speaks volumes about the different roles within this society, as well as their economic realities. The artist captures a world where labor and simple living define existence. Regnu invites us to reflect on the lives of those who lived and worked in these villages, whose stories and struggles shaped the landscape we see today.
