Brice Marden made 'Range' using wax and oil paint, probably experimenting with different ratios to get that subtle surface quality. It looks so simple, but I bet he spent ages figuring out the exact right mix. I can imagine Marden mixing and layering these colors, wiping them back, and then doing it all over again. That yellow panel – it's like a ray of sun trying to break through the greys. And those grey panels – they're not just grey, are they? They’re complex, shifting, full of quiet energy. I see Rothko, but more contained, more structured. That first stroke, that first layer – it’s always a question mark. And with each move, each decision, the painting shifts and settles, until it finally feels right. It’s like a conversation, or a dance. And when you look at it, you become part of that dance too.
