Editor: Here we have Hokusai's "The Kintai Bridge in SuÅ Province." I'm struck by the contrast between the intricate bridge and the majestic mountain in the background. What visual elements do you find most compelling in this composition? Curator: The bridge’s rhythmic, arched structure creates a compelling dialogue with the static, triangular form of the mountain. Note how the artist contrasts the textures of the bridge's stone supports with the smooth surface of the water. It’s a study in formal oppositions, wouldn’t you agree? Editor: Absolutely, the textures create so much visual interest. I hadn’t considered the formal oppositions so directly. Thank you! Curator: Indeed. This is what close analysis reveals, and why formalism is so important to art.
