Mia Bake made this landscape etching "Geborgen in de ruimte," which translates to "Safe in Space," sometime in the early 20th century. Just look at this limited palette of earthy browns, mapping out a panoramic view with impressive detail and nuance. You can almost feel the breeze rustling through the trees. I imagine Bake hunched over a copper plate, carefully etching each line, probably in reverse! It's amazing to think about the kind of focus and determination that goes into this type of work. Each mark is so deliberate. I love how the texture of the land seems to undulate, suggesting a sense of movement. The distant trees look like a soft, blurry dream. It seems like she took her time looking at the landscape to be able to make the artwork from her memory. Landscape has always provided a sense of grounding and connection for artists. This piece feels like an invitation to contemplate the beauty of the natural world. It's a reminder that artists are always in conversation with each other, learning and responding to the work of those who came before them, making this print a window into a moment in time.
