This is a painted wooden handle for an umbrella or parasol, crafted by Gustav Schnitzler. Imagine him in his workshop, perhaps in the glow of the late afternoon sun, meticulously layering paint onto the wood. The deep, glossy brown pulls me in. I wonder what the act of holding this handle felt like? I can imagine the smooth, cool touch of the wood against one's skin on a warm day. And, the way that the carved details meet the palm. The geometric patterns add a touch of whimsy. It’s the kind of object that whispers stories of a slower, more deliberate time. I think of folk artists, quietly honing their craft, and finding beauty in the everyday. It’s a reminder that art isn't always about grand gestures. Sometimes, it's about the intimate connection between a maker and a material. I'm happy to share my imaginings with you!
