This lacquer mirror case was created by Fathallah Shirazi, active in the 19th century in Iran. Immediately, one notices the semi-circular form, a shape that evokes a sense of completeness and enclosure, perfectly suited to the function of a mirror case. The gold ground, punctuated by delicate floral motifs, provides a shimmering, opulent background. This gilded space is then overlaid with meticulously rendered birds and flowers in muted tones, creating a layered visual experience. The composition invites us to reflect on the interplay between surface and depth, presence and absence. The birds, strategically placed, create a sense of movement and dynamism, contrasting with the static, ornamental quality of the background flora. This juxtaposition between naturalistic representation and abstract ornamentation is central to understanding the piece. Do these elements destabilize established meanings, offering an exploration of perception and representation? The mirror case serves not only as a functional object but as a site of contemplation, where the gaze is reflected and refracted through layers of meaning.
