Delizy's turn-of-the-century sepia print depicts three men, probably in France, kitted out in dust goggles, perched in their motorcar. It’s a small photograph, 119 x 162 mm, but it tells a story of speed and adventure. I can imagine Delizy, there in the moment, holding the camera, composing the scene, and thinking about light, focus, and the expressions on those faces. The monochrome lends a kind of timelessness to the image, but also a slightly faded memory. Look at the way the light catches the spokes of the wheels, and the confident gaze of the driver. Delizy must have been excited by the new possibilities of capturing modern life. It’s like a snapshot of a fleeting moment, yet it's frozen in time. And although the technology is now archaic, you feel like nothing has changed at all. Painters are always looking at photographs, just as photographers are inspired by paintings. It is like an ongoing exchange of ideas. I love to see how artists play with different ways of seeing, thinking, and experiencing the world.
