Jurriaan Andriessen made this watercolor of a dike outside Amsterdam sometime in the late 18th century. The use of watercolor on paper aligns with the artistic conventions of the time, however, it’s Andriessen's delicate touch that really makes this work stand out. Notice how the thin washes of color evoke the damp atmosphere and vastness of the Dutch landscape. The texture of the paper plays a key role here, absorbing the pigment and creating a sense of depth and luminosity. The horizon line flattens almost to abstraction, contrasting with details such as the wooden fences that bisect the land. Beyond its aesthetic qualities, this work offers insights into the social and economic landscape of the Dutch Golden Age. Dikes were essential infrastructure, requiring collective labor and expertise. By depicting this scene, Andriessen acknowledges the labor that shaped the Netherlands. So, when we look at this work, we’re not just seeing a pretty view but also appreciating the intricate relationship between people, land, and labor.
