Jan Lanting made this photograph of a dolmen in Trégastel, sometime in the 20th century. I am drawn to the way Lanting renders texture. There is a soft, almost velvety quality to the stone, achieved through a subtle play of light and shadow. It makes you want to reach out and feel it. Look at the way the light catches the rough edges of the stones. The contrast between the smooth, worn surfaces and the jagged, broken edges tells a story of time and weathering. You can almost feel the weight of those stones, the pressure they exert on each other. It reminds me of some of the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, their typologies of industrial structures. Ultimately, this photograph invites us to contemplate the relationship between nature, time, and human intervention. It is a reminder that art can be found in the most unexpected places.
