This engraving by Crispijn van de Passe the Younger, presents us with Erato and Terpsichore, two muses from classical antiquity. Erato, muse of lyric poetry, holds a book, symbol of knowledge and the poetic arts, while Terpsichore, the muse of dance, is seen holding a musical instrument, a signifier of rhythm and harmony. These muses are not confined to ancient Greece; they re-emerge throughout history, each time imbued with new cultural significance. Note the book held by Erato. This object, reminiscent of the ancient scrolls of knowledge, evolves through medieval manuscripts to printed books. This evolution mirrors the shifting cultural values placed on learning and artistic expression. Observe how the artists across time have reimagined the muses. From the early Roman sculptures to Renaissance paintings, each era projects its own ideals of beauty and inspiration onto these figures. They are continuously being re-encoded with the desires and dreams of each passing age. They are an eternal return, forever changing, forever the same.
