Editor: This untitled print by Constant features a group of abstracted figures on a bold red ground. The figures seem disjointed, almost like broken toys. How do you interpret this work? Curator: Considering Constant's involvement with the Situationist International, I see these figures as representing the fragmented individual within capitalist society. The red could symbolize the alienation and struggle inherent in that system. What do you think about the role of play in the composition? Editor: I see what you mean about fragmentation. The wheel element makes me think of technology, maybe how it both empowers and confines us. Curator: Exactly! And within Situationist theory, play was key. Constant wanted to reclaim it as a revolutionary tool, challenging societal norms and imagining new ways of being. This print is a powerful statement about the need for social change. Editor: That gives me a whole new appreciation for its complexities. I'll never look at a wheel the same way.
