Leendert van der Cooghen made this etching of a Roman Warrior in the 17th century. Here, the warrior stands with his back to us, holding a spear and shield, a tableau imbued with the weight of classical ideals. The shield, a symbol of protection, echoes through time, appearing in various forms across cultures, from the Greek hoplites to medieval knights. Consider, too, the spear. It is not merely a weapon, but a scepter-like object. As an attribute of both gods and heroes, the weapon appears across eras and cultures, and it has shifted in meaning from a hunting tool to a symbol of power. The warrior's posture, turned away, invites a psychoanalytic reading, suggesting introspection or a reluctance to face the viewer. This posture mirrors the archetype of the hero in retreat. It is a visual echo that touches on our collective memory of the heroic journey, a path of conflict, introspection, and transformation. It continues to reappear and evolve, resonating with primal human emotions.
