“Revelation No. 2” was painted by Danny Galieote using oil on panel. Oil paint is a versatile medium, allowing for minute detail. Galieote’s rendering of flesh and glass is so precise, it almost seems photographic. Yet the work is stylized; the flattened space and wallpaper background recall the compositions of David Hockney, who similarly uses paint to explore psychological states. Galieote's technical skill is evident in the detailed rendering of the glass, skin and paisley motif. The glass in particular demonstrates the qualities of the material. It is smooth, clear and reflective. He creates a compelling visual experience, that invites the viewer to contemplate the nature of observation and how we perceive the world around us. By using the traditional medium of oil paint to create an image that explores contemporary themes, Galieote challenges our expectations of both the medium and the subject matter, and makes us reconsider the relationship between fine art and craft.
