Fernando García Ponce made this layered artwork called Figura Sobre Fondo Azul by pasting printed material onto canvas. Imagine Ponce at work: building up the surface with found images, scraps of paper, maybe even stamps or labels? There’s a real joy in seeing how he’s arranged these fragments, creating a kind of conversation between different textures and tones. See the deep blue rectangle set against the bright red border? It reminds me of how Albers played with color relationships. Ponce's work is a kind of material poetics. Notice the layering; Ponce wants us to think about painting as a process of accumulation and renewal, where each mark, each collage element, contributes to the whole. It reminds us that artists are always building on what came before, transforming influences into something entirely new.
