Jos Hemeleer made this print of a woman seated on a donkey and a man standing by a cow, using etching, sometime in the mid-19th century. It presents a pastoral scene, perhaps reflecting the romantic interest in rural life and peasant culture that was prevalent in Europe at that time. The image creates meaning through the contrast of the woman's calm demeanor, her comfortable transport, with the working man and his cow. Made in Belgium, at a time when the country was undergoing rapid industrialization, the artwork may be interpreted as a comment on the social structures of its time, perhaps longing for a simpler, pre-industrial past. Hemeleer had connections with the art academy in Antwerp. It would be interesting to know if the academy influenced his romantic interest in rural life. Further research into Hemeleer's life, the cultural context of 19th-century Belgium, and the influence of the Antwerp art academy would help us understand the social and institutional forces that shaped this artwork.
