This print, "Het Begijnhof te Amsterdam," was made around 1644 by an anonymous artist. The image offers a bird's-eye view of the Beguinage in Amsterdam. These semi-religious communities of women, neither fully nuns nor laywomen, arose in the medieval period, and offered women a unique space outside of traditional patriarchal structures. What did it mean for these women to come together in community? What kind of autonomy did they have? And what kind of labor did they perform? The Beguinages provided an alternative path for women, especially those who sought independence or did not wish to marry. This image, made during a time of religious and social change, invites us to reflect on the ways women have shaped their own identities. It raises questions about the complexities of gender and religious expression.
